AORS Elgin/Middlesex/Oxford Local Associations Joint Meeting

Rusty Russell gets his point across with humour

Municipal road law may sound like a boring presentation topic but when W.D. (Rusty) Russell, Q.C., B.A., LL.B. speaks about the subject it becomes essential, clear and concise information presented with large dose of good, old fashioned clean humour.  (Apparently the audience wasn’t emotionally mature enough for topics related to “women, liquor and fast cars”).

Mr. Russell was the main speaker at the joint Elgin/Middlesex/Oxford AORS Local Association meeting on Friday, October 30th in Shedden, Ontario.  From his opening comments through the Q/A session he had all of the approximately 120 attendees listening attentively and – you don’t see this very often – taking notes.  Hi book; ‘Russell on Roads, 2nd Edition’ is a must for anyone dealing with roads.  His bio is very impressive:

W.D. (Rusty) Russell, Q.C., B.A., LL.B., is a member of the Ontario Bar and is a member of the Orillia Ontario law firm of Russell, Christie, Miller, Koughan, Winnitoy, Veldboom LLP. He is an expert in municipal and planning law, particularly in the law relating to public roads and highways in Ontario. He is a frequent and well known lecturer at local law association meetings outside Toronto and has spoken to provincial and local municipal government employees on the subject of roads, including members of the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors, The Ontario Good Roads Association, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and other local government organizations. He is also the author of a number of articles published in Municipal World Magazine on roads and planning law. Mr. Russell is the first recipient of the Ontario Bar Association Municipal Law Section Award of Excellence (2005).

The organizing committee for this meeting did a great job setting up the venue, food and the other excellent speakers including:

Thank you to all of the suppliers who set up a small trade show and provided their expertise, support and encouragement to our local Municipal members, administrators and elected officials.  Perfect location, good speakers, excellent food, friendly network of peers all combined for a very memorable AORS day.  Well done.

RoadMap: Mr. Russell advises that consistent, high quality professional training provided by AORS is the best way to minimize liability under Ontario’s Municipal Statute Law.

CentreLine: This event really sets the bar high for other Local Associations who should emulate this organizational effort.
